The proposed scheme can anticipate overload situations and minimize their impact on the accuracy of the traffic queries.The main novelty of our approach is that it considers queries as black boxes, with arbitrary (and highly variable) input traffic and processing cost. Our system requires only a high-level specification of the utility of each query to guide the load shedding procedure and assure a fair allocation of computing resources among queries.Presenter: Gianluca IannacconeDiverse Secure Systems Declarative Secure Networking The aim of this project is to make it easier to specify secure distributed systems in a fashion that is independent of the specific security libraries, technologies, or hardware components used to implement security. We demonstrate a small trusted primitive (attested append-only memory) that improves both performance and fault tolerance, and its extensions towards improving the fault tolerance of long-term archival storage services.Presenters: Petros Maniatis, Byung-Gon ChunModern Communication APIThe communications API used by most Internet applications was developed when synchronous access to remote computing resources was of primary interest.  Today, Internet applications are more concerned with access to services and content.  We are developing an asychronous API for applications operating in today's "modern", content-oriented Internet.  The API is based on the general publish/subscribe paradigm, where applications express their intent for using network services as opposed to the specific actions required to obtain them.  This allows application developers to free themselves from worrying about the specific time, protocol, and host to access when communicating on the Internet.  These details are left to the operating system, user, and system administrator.Presenter: Michael DemmerEveryday Sensing and Perception (ESP)Resource Constrained ReasoningAs part of Every Sensing and Perception (ESP) project, our research focuses on resource-constrained reasoning, which aims to develop an in-network reasoning framework for anomaly detection, signal processing, feature extraction, object recognition, etc. Our results show that our method can dramatically reduce the computation and communication overhead in the distributed system, while still guarantees the desired learning and decision-making accuracy.Presenters: Ling Huang, XuanLong Nguyen and Anthony JosephApproximation Algorithms for Resource Constrained Reasoning To support resource constrained reasoning in ESP project, we aim to develop approximation algorithms for a set of machine learning procedures, including PCA, SVM and spectral clustering. We explore the fundamental trade-off between the degree of data approximation and the achieved reasoning accuracy, and develop algorithms which are efficient and optimal under target accuracy requirement and resource constraints.Presenters: Ling Huang, DongHui YangProgramming LanguagesShar C: Checking Data Sharing in Multithreaded C ProgramsSharC “sharing checker” helps programmers write correct concurrent programs by explicitly specifying the data sharing strategy -- what data is private, what data is protected by locks, etc. That strategy is then checked at compile and runtime by the SharC compiler.Presenter: Zachary AndersonProgramming by Sketching Programming by Sketching: Sketching is a program synthesis technique for implementing tricky high-performance programs such as stencils and ciphers.  In the poster, we will show how we extended sketching for shared-memory concurrent data structures.Presenter: Armando Solar-LezamaEffective Static Race Detection for Java This poster presents an approach to static race detection for Java that uses four novel static analyses each of which approximates a separate necessary condition for a race.  The approach is precise in that it misidentifies few non-races as races, it is sound in that it is guaranteed to report all races, and it is scalable in that it is fully automatic and checks programs comprising hundreds of thousands of Java bytecodes in a few minutes. The approach is also effective, exposing tens to hundreds of concurrency bugs in mature and widely-used Java programs, many of which were fixed within a week of reporting.Presenter: Mayur NaikNetworkingNetComplex: A Complexity Metric for Networked System Designs The systems and networking community lays great store by “simple” system designs but our evaluation of system simplicity often relies more on intuition and qualitative discussion than rigorous quantitative metrics. To this end, we have designed a prototype remote consultation system intended to provide the social, institutional and infrastructural context for sustained, self-organizing growth of a globally-distributed Ghanaian medical community. The design draws on three key design principles (social networks as a framework on which to build incentives within a self-organizing network; optional and incremental integration with existing referral mechanisms; and a weakly-connected, distributed architecture that allows for a highly interactive, responsive system despite failures in connectivity). We are conducting a series of trial deployments in southern Ghana (Fall 2007) and central Ghana (Summer 2008).Presenters: Paul Aoki, Melissa HoRural Connectivity PlatfromRural Connectivity Platform (RCP) is a wireless long distance back haul solution that operates on non licensed spectrums to provide the perfect product for emerging markets. Developed by the Intel Research Berkeley lab, the RCP is a low cost, low power and low touch solution designed to bring connectivity to remote areas. Applying a TDMA modification to the MAC layer of standard 802.11, RCP is able to achieve connection distances of up to 100 km unobstructed line-of-sight. They end up buried in landfills or forgotten in desk drawers. Beyond the Desk Drawer repurposes these abandoned personal communication devices as networked sensing stations.
