Biography
Byung-Gon Chun is a research scientist at Intel Research Berkeley. His research interests are cloud computing, mobile computing, and secure distributed systems and networks. Prior to that, Chun was a postdoctoral researcher at the International Computer Science Institute. Chun holds a Ph.D. in the Computer Science Division at the University of California, Berkeley, an M.S. from the Computer Science Department at Stanford University, and a B.S. and an M.S. from the Electronic Engineering Department at Seoul National University, South Korea.Research
Chun's research interests are broadly in the areas of distributed systems and networks with emphasis on cloud computing and smartphone computing. Chun's research direction is to make it easier to build complex, large-scale distributed systems through new, easy ways to build such systems. There are two main research directions.First, Chun explores seamlessly utilizes heterogeneous computing components by partitioning applications and moving computation automatically. In particular, Chun leads the CloneCloud project that augments smart phone applications through cloud clone execution. In a similar context, Chun is exploring how to architect power-efficient cloud computing data centers with heterogeneous computing components and virtualization technologies.

Second, Chun is building a new system prediction engine for cloud computing through program language and machine learning techniques. The system automatically builds a model of a system for predicting metrics of interest. Chun is applying the system to several cloud computing frameworks.
In the past, Chun has worked on trusted primitives for (Byzantine) fault tolerant systems, peer-to-peer systems such as distributed hash tables, new Internet architectures in the Trusted Primitive (A2M, Bonafide), IRIS, OceanStore, OpenDHT, and DONA projects.
