I am a research scientist at Intel Labs Santa Clara. My interests are at the intersection of mobile computing and HCI. I have spent many years using a wearable computer (first starting in 1999), and I am very interested in the interaction challenges brought about by mobile device usage in everyday situations. One thrust of my research has been examining the fundamental input and output interaction issues of using mobile devices. I have conducted several longitudinal evaluations of mobile keyboards. I developed the dual-purpose speech interaction technique as a mechanism to reduce manual input by using speech recognition of the user's conversation with another person. I have also examined other interaction aspects such as using different types of displays while on-the-go and the impact of mobile device placement on access time. I have also been examining the use of multiple mobile devices in conjunction by groups of collocated users. My current work is exploring how the displays of several mobile devices can be joined together, and understanding how spatial sensing can be used in these situations.
